Why We Started

Every great food story begins with passion—and El Taco Express is no different.

Mr. PK, a seasoned restaurateur, has successfully operated several renowned Mexican and Indian restaurants in Singapore. Over the years, one thing became clear—his deep-rooted love for authentic Mexican cuisine was more than just business; it was personal.

That passion was shared by his wife, Kirti, who has always been inspired by the vibrant culture of Mexican street food. In early 2024, driven by her love for food and flavors, she made a bold life decision—she quit her airline career to bring the true taste of Mexico to the streets of Johor Bahru, Malaysia.

What followed was months of dedication, experimentation, and relentless R&D, alongside Chef Khiran, a close friend of PK and an experienced culinary professional who has worked with 5-star hotels and renowned F&B chains in Malaysia. Together, they perfected recipes that stayed true to Mexico’s roots while appealing to local tastes.

From a Food Truck to a Movement

In May 2024, El Taco Express launched its very first Mexican food truck in Johor Bahru with a simple yet powerful mission:

Every ingredient matters. That’s why our spices, chilies, and key seasonings are imported directly from Mexico, ensuring every bite delivers an authentic Latino experience. What we serve is restaurant-quality Mexican food, offered at prices that everyone can enjoy.

The response was overwhelming.
Johoreans and Singaporeans quickly fell in love with our tacos.

Within just five months, El Taco Express expanded into KSL City Mall, followed by multiple new locations—turning a humble food truck into one of the fastest-growing Mexican street food brands in Johor Bahru.

A Flavorful History

Have you ever wondered where the taco came from?

The story of the taco dates back over 300 years to 18th-century Mexican silver miners. These hardworking miners needed a convenient meal that was easy to carry and filling—thus, the taco was born.

Interestingly, the word “taco” originally referred to small paper-wrapped charges of gunpowder used to blast through rock during mining. Much like those charges, today’s taco is a flavorful wrap—filled with seasoned meat and spices—that delivers an explosion of taste in every bite.
